For those who are eligible and apply for a temporary residence card. What is temporary residence card for foreigners in Vietnam?
According to the guidance in Article 36 of the Law on entry; exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam 2014 (amended in 2019); only some cases of foreigners in Vietnam have temporary residence cards; if they apply for a license and get an approval.
In which, the duration of the granted temporary residence card is consistent with the entry purpose; and the request of the agency, organization or individual. Temporary residence cards are valid from 01 year to 05 years; but at least 30 days shorter than the passport’s validity. Specifically:

Granted to the following subjects:

– LV2: People working with socio-political organizations, social organizations, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
– Tel: Foreign lawyers practicing in Vietnam.
– DH: People who come to practice and study.
Temporary residence card is valid for no more than 3 years
Granted to the following subjects:
– NN1 – Head of representative offices and projects of international organizations and foreign non-governmental organizations in Vietnam.
– NN2 – Heads of representative offices, branches of foreign traders; representative offices of foreign economic, cultural and other professional organizations in Vietnam.
TT – Foreigners who are spouses; children under 18 years of age of foreigners have visas with symbols LV1; LV2, LS, DT1, DT2, DT3, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LD1, LD2; or a foreigner being the father, mother, wife, husband or child of a Vietnamese citizen.
Temporary residence card is valid for no more than 2 years
Granted to the following subjects:
– LD1 – Foreigners working in Vietnam with confirmation that they are not eligible for work permits; unless otherwise provided for in an international treaty to which Vietnam is a signatory.
– PV1 – Issued to reporters and newspapers residing in Vietnam.
Expired temporary residence card will be considered for a new card.
Temporary residence period of foreigner in Vietnam who does not have a temporary residence card
According to Article 38 of the Law on Entry of foreigners in Vietnam; if a foreigner who enters Vietnam does not have a valid permanent residence card or temporary residence card; he or she will get a certificate of temporary residence at the border gate with the following duration:
– The duration of temporary residence is equal to the duration of the visa;
Visa duration:
– SQ, EV symbol visa: no more than 30 days
– HN-symbol visa: no more than 03 months
– Sign visa: no more than 06 months.
– Visas with symbols NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4, LV1, LV2, DT4, DN1, DN2, NN1, NN2, NN3, DH, PV1, PV2 and TT: no more than 12 months
– Visas with symbols LD1, LD2: no more than 02 years
– Visa symbol DT3: no more than 03 years
– Visas with symbols LS, DT1, DT2: no more than 05 years
– In case of visa with symbol DL for more than 30 days; temporary residence will get for 30 days and will be considered for extension of temporary residence;
– For persons exempted from visas under international treaties to which Vietnam is a contracting party; the temporary residence period shall be granted in accordance with the provisions of the international treaty; if an international treaty does not stipulate a temporary residence period; a temporary residence permit shall be granted for 30 days;
– For citizens of a country that is unilaterally exempted from visa by Vietnam; they will have a temporary stay of 15 days. Particularly for citizens of countries that are unilaterally exempted from visas by Vietnam to enter border gate economic zones, they will be granted temporary residence for 15 days, and those who enter special administrative-economic units or coastal economic zones will be granted temporary residence for 30 days.
