Documents required to apply for a German marriage visa include:

  • Valid passport
  • Two biometric passport photos
  • Also two copies of long-term visa applications
  • Certificate of filing for marriage registration
  • A certificate from the German civil status office that the application for marriage registration; has been submitted according to Clause 4, Article 13 of the Civil Status Law
  • The certificate must include a note from the civil status officer that it has been; determined that the conditions for marriage have been met. Usually, this certificate can be; issued only after the competent state court has granted the waiver of the marriageable certificate.
  • Proof of residence of the betrothed in Germany: Certificate of civil status registration (not older than 6 months)
  • Photocopy of the passport or identity card of the engaged person living in Germany.
  • For non-German/EU citizens please submit a copy of the residence permit
  • Proof of proficiency in simple German: German level A1 according to – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • In addition, Health insurance for the duration of the visa

Only submit this certificate of insurance, if a visa can be issued. The visa office will notify the visa applicant by phone.

Notably:

There is no need to present a guarantee commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) when applying for a visa.

Notes during the application process for a marriage visa in Germany

If it is; deemed that both male and female parties are eligible for marriage as prescribed by the Law on Marriage and Family, the Embassy shall register the marriage for both male and female parties.

In case it is necessary to verify, the embassy shall send a document to the relevant functional agency requesting verification and settlement on the basis of the answer.

When registering a marriage, both male and female parties must be present and sign the Marriage Certificate and the marriage registration book. The Embassy issues to each spouse an original marriage certificate. A copy of the Marriage Certificate is issued at the request of the spouse.
